Located in Indonesia, Batam is part of the Riau Islands Province which consists of the Riau Archipelago, the Tudjuh Archipelago and the Lingga Islands. Batam is the name given to both the city and island and it is a popular destination for both tourists and executives.

Although people visit the island from far and wide, its main influx of visitors come from Singapore. Singapore may be in Malaysia but in reality it's only an hour ferry trip from Singapore to Batam. This is the reason that many Singaporean businesses have been established on the Riau island, and there is even a special trade agreement with Singapore which allows for tax-free trade between the two destinations. There are many types of accommodation to be found on the island, and these range from all-encompassing resorts to budget hotels and more traditional hotels.

If you stay in one of the resorts, you'll have everything at your disposal. The nation has grown rather quickly since the 1970s and much of the best architecture is relatively recent, so you can expect beautiful contemporary premises in which to enjoy the lovely weather and take in the marvelous views of the local water. Most of the good resorts offer rooms and suites with balconies, and you can count on room service to bring you that cocktail or just your morning coffee while you recover from a night of dining and dancing. Of course, no two places are the same but many offer a wealth of extended facilities. These range from children's play areas and large swimming pools, to spas, gyms and great places to eat. Because of the often warm and humid climate, you can count on air-conditioning in rooms and suites.

The budget hotels may not offer you a place to eat, but the three and four-star places often have more than one good restaurant. South East Asian cuisine is the thing to eat while in Batam and you won't have to leave the premises to enjoy a variety of this exciting cuisine. Although it's worth pointing out that while the oriental delights are not to be missed by the true foodie, many of the establishments have a wide range of cuisines in their restaurants. This means that you're likely to able to enjoy Italian food and French cuisine, among other European and Western favorites.

Aside from being close to Singapore, which is only a short ferry ride away, the island has many of its own distractions for tourists and all who like to soak up the local culture. Rent a car via the front desk and travel about to discover this rare place. It has, amongst other attractions, one of the biggest Buddhist temples in Asia, Buddha Maitreya. Just ask your front desk to point you in the direction of the local attractions and sites of interest. For some retail therapy head to the Nagoya Hill Shopping Mall, while those who want to wander the greens will find a beautiful golf course.

The "Barelang" bridges are famous and something of a local icon. The name is a contraction of Batam, Rempang and Galang, three of the islands which are connected by the bridges, and these allow you to travel easily beyond Batam to explore further and discover the many pleasures found on other islands.
